The 5th VELUX Daylight Symposium

New Eyes on Existing Buildings

We are happy to announce the 5th VELUX Daylight Symposium to be held at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen on 15 and 16 May 2013. The school, founded in 1754 - and one of the oldest schools of architecture in the world - is located at Holmen, a congregation of small islands in the heart of Copenhagen harbour - formerly used as naval base.

The theme of the symposium will be “New Eyes on Existing Buildings” and will specifically focus on the opportunities and challenges offered by daylight in the retrofit of existing buildings and city structures. While they are not yet realised, most of the sustainable buildings of the future are already built. How can we exploit the untapped potential of buildings by using daylight to transform our homes, workplaces and public spaces into healthier and more sustainable built environments? The programme will address this question with presentations from research as well as experiences and viewpoints from engineering and architectural practices.

The last symposium introduced the first Academic Forum, a new community for PhD students working with daylighting research. We are glad to announce that this symposium will host its second Academic Forum, a one day forum together with an invited panel of leading scientific researchers.

The previous daylight symposiums – held in Budapest in 2005, in Bilbao in 2007, in Rotterdam in 2009 and in Lausanne in 2011 – brought together participants from research, architectural practices as well as legislators and lighting designers from all over the world.
